Abortion (miscarriage). Symptoms and Causes

Definition of Abortion

Abortion is defined as the termination of pregnancy by natural causes or by being deliberately caused.
Symptoms of spontaneous abortion (miscarriage)
The three main symptoms of spontaneous abortion are: pain, cervical dilation and bleeding.

Symptoms of miscarriage in the first month

If spontaneous abortion occurs in the first month of conception, it almost always goes clinically unnoticed, since the three specific symptoms of miscarriage do not occur. For example, there is usually no pain due to lack of uterine contraction nor dilation of the cervix because the fertilized egg being so small,can easily pass through the cervical canal as normal. Bleeding can manifest itself in a mild form such as blood clots or from the fertilized egg being expelled.

Symptoms of miscarriage in the second and third month of conception
In this case the symptoms manifest themselves in a more obvios way. There is more apparent bleeding, pain and a degree of dilation of the cervix in order to expel the egg whcih is more developed by this point as it is now an embryo.

Symptoms of miscarriage from fourth to sixth month

This is called fetal abortion and already shows mechanisms of action very similar to childbirth. You could say that it is miniature childbirth.

* At first the fetus is expelled, after breakage of the amniotic sac occurs.
* Second, the placenta and membranes are expelled.
* In this case the pains are strong and prolonged (due to uterine contraction). Blood flow is more plentiful and the cervix is more dilated. Within the blood that is lost, the expelled fetus is easily recognized in whole or in fragments.

Causes of miscarriage
Among the causes of spontaneous abortion include: local maternal causes, general maternal causes, occupational causes, paternal genetic causes and the unknown.

Local maternal causes
With this we mean those that affect the genital area. These include:

* Inflammation of the uterine lining (endometritis, especially blennorrhagic).
* Tumors of the uterus
* Insufficient development of the uterus. In this case, the cavity is too small to hold the fetus up to the ninth month.
* A congenital or acquired deformity of the uterus

General maternal causes
* Among these are diabetes and all the debilitating diseases of women
* Hormonal factors
* Thyroid problems.
* Smoking, drinking and drug use.
* Very poor diet
* Radiation
* Acute and chronic infections. In these cases, the fetus may die from toxic poisoning, blood-borne bacteria from mother to fetus, or heavy bleeding that separates the fetus from the uterine wall through which it receives it's nutrition.

Occupational causes

In many countries, spontaneous abortions may be caused by the woman doing heavy work: rice gatherers, sewing machines, manipulative snuff, phosphorus, etc..

Causes of parental miscarriage
Weak or poor sperm vitality.

Other causes of spontaneous abortion
* The age of a woman. After becoming 35 years old, the percentage of cases of spontaneous abortion increases.
* Abnormalities in the chromosomes of the fetus by a faulty egg or sperm.
* Psychic trauma. It has sometimes been said that strong emotions have caused miscarriage. Although this cause cannot be excluded, it happens very rarely.
* Sex and physical strain. As in the former case it is unlikely that these are causes of miscarriage, but not impossible.
* Strong trauma. These instances are also rare because of the protection that the fetus has within the womb.
