Amoebic dysentery:

Definition
It is the intestinal infection caused by amoeba histolytica, which is widespread in tropical countries and in a few European countries.

Symptoms of amoebic dysentery
After an incubation period of a week and sometimes more, the first symptoms that appear are:

* Malaise
* A heavy feeling in the stomach
* Intestinal pains
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea (this comes after a few days)
* Many diarrheal stools which are painful and liquidy.
* Diarrheal stools with blood and mucus
* Mild fever (this symptom is important to take into account so as to distinguish it from bacillary dysentery)
* If the patient isn't taking liquids then you are dealing with thirst and dehydration.
* If the situation worsens weght loss can occur and weakness.

The causes of amebic dysentery
The disease is transmitted through water, vegetables and fruit infested with parasites and also by flies and other insects.

Bacillary Dysentery - Shigella

An acute epidemic infectious disease, very common in the tropics, characterized by inflammatory lesions, ulcers and gangrene in the large intestine and lower part of the ileum, and symptomatically by frequent bowel movements which are bloody, mucousy, painful or tenesmus.

Causes of Shigellosis
* Shigella sonnei (Shigella group D), is responsible for most cases of shigellosis in the United States.
* Shigella flexneri (Shigella group B) causes almost all other cases.
* Shigella dysenteriae type 1 is rare in the U.S. but can lead to deadly outbreaks in developing countries.

The source of infection is usually the faeces of the infected, in which large numbers of bacilli are found. These faeces can infect healthy individuals directly or indirectly through contaminated water, food and other substances. Also the flies that land on faeces can cause infection.

Symptoms of bacillary dysentery or Shigellosis
The disease occurs abruptly after a period of 3-5 days of incubation. The main symptoms are:

* Acute abdominal pain (sudden) or cramping, sometimes quite intense
* Fever acute (sudden) continuous high-rate intermittent
* Blood, mucus or pus in the stool
* Rectal pain with colic (tenesmus)
* Watery diarrhea
* Nausea and vomiting
