Cholesterol: Symptoms. Treatments and remedies. Natural Medicine

What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy fat, sterol group of animal origin, which was first isolated in gallstones, and present in abundance in the brain, adrenal glands, uterus and corpus luteum especially in the circulating blood (lymph , plasma and erythrocytes), and is missing in plants. But it appears as a white substance, crystalline, insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents (ether, chloroform, benzene, etc.).

The cholesterol in the body
Cholesterol is primarily from two sources: one internal and other exogenous or endogenous and food (eggs: yolks, offal: brain, liver). Its role in multiple organismes, although it has been linked primarily to the transport and absorption of fat, regulating cell permeability, formation of bile acids and progesterone and probably with vitamin D3.

Cholesterol is carried in the body by two types of protein: low density lipoprotein (LDL), which carry three-quarters of cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein (HDL). The total blood cholesterol is quantified, measured separately: LDL ( "bad") cholesterol and HDL ( "good).

If the levels of total and LDL cholesterol are elevated is at increased risk of heart attack, as do low levels of HDL (below 0.9 millimoles per liter)

His increased blood levels has been linked to certain degenerative processes, and in particular atherosclerosis. Hence the need for comparison taking into account the incorrect feeding in the western world is observed.

Symptoms of high cholesterol
When cholesterol is elevated, usually do not have a clear symptoms, but is a risk factor for other disorders with noticeable symptoms like angina pectoris.

When levels are high, cholesterol can appear as yellow nodules under the skin of the elbows or knees, or under the eyes.

Causes of increased cholesterol levels
Have been linked with a diet rich in saturated fats found in animal foods such as beef, butter, coconut oil, palm oil, hydrogenated oils used in processed foods and whole milk products. But this theory is no longer as widely accepted as the dietary cholesterol is poorly absorbed, and blood cholesterol levels mainly depend on cholesterol synthesis by the body.

However, it is clear that cholesterol production is indeed stimulated by high intakes of saturated fat. Excess weight, smoking and lack of exercise also contribute to high cholesterol levels. Genetic predisposition may also be a contributing factor.
