Substance formed when red blood cells break down. Bilirubin is part of the bile produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Yellow pigment is a breakdown product of hemoglobin. When increases and accumulates abnormally above normal levels can cause a yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes, called jaundice.
