Medical Definition: Biopsy

Diagnostic procedure that involves removing a sample of tissue or cells for examination by a pathologist under a microscope or subjecting the cells or tissue to other tests, and the presence of cancer cells. There are many different types of biopsies. The most common types are: (1) incisional biopsy, in which extracts only a sample of tissue, (2) excisional biopsy, which is extracted by an entire lump or suspicious area, and (3 ) needle biopsy, in which a sample of tissue with a needle. When a wide needle is used, the procedure is called a core biopsy. When using a fine needle, the procedure is called aspiration biopsy needle.
