Medical Definition: Bone Density

Measure the amount of minerals (usually calcium and phosphorus) that contains a certain volume of bone. The bone density measurements can be used to diagnose osteoporosis, determine whether treatments are effective against osteoporosis and calculate the probability that the bones break. The decrease in bone density may occur in patients treated for cancer. Also called bone mineral density, BMD, and bone mass.
