Medical Definition: Bone mass

Measure the amount of minerals (usually calcium and phosphorus) that contains a certain volume of bone. Measurements of bone mass can be used to diagnose osteoporosis, determine whether treatments are effective against osteoporosis and calculate the probability that the bones break. Decreased bone mass can occur in patients treated for cancer. Also called bone mineral density, bone density, and BMD.
