Medical Definition: Bone mineral density

Measure the amount of minerals (usually calcium and phosphorus) that contains a certain volume of bone. Measurements of bone mineral density can be used to diagnose osteoporosis, determine whether treatments are effective against osteoporosis and calculate the probability that the bones break. Decreased bone mineral density may occur in patients treated for cancer. Also called bone density, BMD, and bone mass.
