Medical Definition: Breast scintigraphy

Type of diagnostic imaging of the breast used to detect cancer cells in the breasts of some women who have had abnormal mammograms of the breast tissue or whose breast tissue is dense. Not used for screening or in place of a mammogram. In this test, a woman receives an injection of a small amount of a radioactive substance called technetium 99, which is absorbed by cancer cells, then using a gamma camera to take pictures of the breasts. Also called sestamibi breast scintigraphy and Miraluma test.
