Enzyme involved in many cellular processes, for example, multiplication of cells. The gene for c-ABL is on chromosome 9. In most patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), the portion of chromosome 9 containing the c-ABL breaks and changes places with a piece of chromosome 22 in order to form the fusion gene BCR-ABL.
