Medical Definition: Cholecalciferol

Nutrient that the body needs to function and stay healthy. Cholecalciferol helps the body use calcium and phosphorus for strong bones and teeth. It is soluble in fat (can dissolve in fats and oils) and is found in fatty fish, egg yolks and dairy products. The skin may also produce cholecalciferol when exposed to sunlight. Not having enough cholecalciferol can cause a bone disease called rickets. It is being studied for the prevention and treatment of some cancers. Also called vitamin D.
