Medical Definition: Colectomy

An operation to remove the entire colon or a portion thereof. When it removes only a portion of the colon, the operation is called a partial colectomy. In an open colectomy, it makes a long incision in the abdominal wall and doctors can see the colon directly. In a laparoscopic colectomy, are several small incisions and inserts a thin, lighted tube attached to a video camera through an opening to guide the operation. Surgical instruments are inserted into the other openings to perform the surgery.
