Medical Definition: Conditioning Regimen

Treatments used to prepare a patient for a stem cell transplant (a procedure by which a person receives blood stem cells that produce any type of blood cell). A conditioning regimen may include chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy and radiation to the entire body. Help prepare the patient's bone marrow to allow the growth of new blood stem cells, helps prevent the patient's body rejecting the transplanted cells and help destroy any cancer cells that are in the body.
