DNA supercoiling. Definition

Medical Definition: DNA supercoiling

DNA winding about itself as a result of unwinding or sobreenrollamiento of the DNA helix. In circular DNAs or closed loops, to twist the DNA around its own axis, change the number of turns of the double helix, so that to restore stability, the molecule is twisted on itself (supercoiling) forming a superhelix of opposite to the initial spin. If the money is made in the direction of clockwise, so that the number of turns of the DNA chain, forming a left-handed superhelix (positive supercoiling), and if the contrary, it forms a superhelix right-handed (negative supercoiling). In nature, DNA is normally circular supercoiled negatively. The eukaryotic DNA supercoiling is also because of its association with nucleosomes.
