FMISO. Definition

Medical Definition: FMISO

A radioactive substance being studied as an imaging agent in head and neck cancers and other cancers. It binds to large molecules in tumor cells that have a low concentration of oxygen. A PET scan detects the radiation it emits (gives off) the FMISO. The amount of FMISO in the tumor may help decide the best treatment and predict whether the cancer will return after treatment. FMISO is a type of element used in radioimaging. Also called 18F-and 18F-MISO fluoromisonidazole.
