Fusion gene BCR-ABL. Definition

Medical Definition: Fusion gene BCR-ABL

Gen formed when parts of chromosomes 9 and 22 break and change position. The ABL gene from chromosome 9 joins the BCR gene on chromosome 22 to form the fusion gene BCR-ABL. The chromosome 22 containing the gene fusion is called the Philadelphia chromosome. The fusion gene BCR-ABL is found in most patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and in some patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).
