A drug used to treat diabetes mellitus (a condition in which the body can not control the amount of sugar in the blood). Is also being studied for the treatment of cancer. It decreases the amount of glucose (a sugar) that the liver releases into the bloodstream and increases the body makes use of glucose. Glucophage is a type of antidiabetic agent. Also called metformin hydrochloride.
