Goodpasture syndrome. Definition

Medical Definition: Goodpasture syndrome

Anatomo-clinical entity associating, in a young adult, a hemorrhagic alveolitis, the cause of hemoptysis and glomerulonephritis, rapidly progressive or malignant, secondary to the presence of autoantibodies against glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and alveolar septal capillaries . Presents with nephritic or nephrotic syndrome and hematuria, iron deficiency anemia, kidney failure and chest X-ray and pathological blood gases (infiltrates and hypoxemia). Confirmation of the diagnosis requires the presence of circulating anti-GBM and its finding on biopsy of such deposits by immunofluorescence (IgG glomerular deposits with linear nature) associated with extracapillary glomerulonephritis or focal segmental necrotizing glomerulonephritis. Treated with corticosteroids, cyclophosphamide and intensive plasmapheresis.
