A protein found on the surface of some cells which binds to the epidermal growth factor causes cells to multiply. It is found in concentrations too high in the surface of many types of cancer cells so that cells can multiply excessively in the presence of epidermal growth factor. Also called ErbB1, HER1, and EGFR.
