HER2/neu. Definition

Medical Definition: HER2/neu

Oncogene that produces a protein involved in normal cell growth (growth factor), which bind substances that promote cell growth. Found in some types of cancer cells, including those of the breast (which can be treated with monoclonal antibodies directed against the protein) and ovaries. Cancer cells that are removed from the body can be tested for the presence of HER2/neu to help decide the best type of treatment. HER2/neu is a type of receptor tyrosine kinase. Also called c-erbB-2 receptor 2 human epidermal growth factor and human EGF receptor 2.
