Hazard ratio. Definition

Medical Definition: Hazard ratio

Measurement of the frequency at which a particular situation in a group compared to how often this situation arises in another group, over time. In the field of cancer research, the hazard ratios are often used in clinical trials to measure the survival of one group of patients who received specific treatment in a given time compared with a control group to which administered another treatment or a placebo. A hazard ratio of 1 means that there is no difference in survival between the two groups. A hazard ratio higher or lower than 1 means that survival was better in one of the groups.
