Monoclonal antibody that binds to HER-2 (receptor human epidermal growth factor) and can kill cancer cells positive for HER-2. Monoclonal antibodies are produced in the laboratory and can locate and bind to substances such as cancer cells. Herceptin is used in the treatment of cancer (breast) breast cancer that is HER-2 positive and has spread after treatment with other drugs. It is also used with other anticancer drugs to treat cancer (breast) HER2-positive breast after surgery. Herceptin is also being studied for treating other cancers. Also called trastuzumab.
