Medical Definition: Hormone receptor

Cellular protein located on the surface of a cell (or inside the cytoplasm of the cell) that binds to a specific hormone. Hormone receptor may be on the cell surface or within the cell. In a cell there are many changes after a hormone binds to its receptor. Testing can be done in tumors seeking to determine whether hormone receptors can be treated with hormones or anti-hormones.
