Form of nutrition that is administered into a vein. Overfeeding does not use the digestive system. You can give a person who can not absorb nutrients through the intestinal tract because of vomiting that will not stop, severe diarrhea or intestinal disease. You may also be administered to persons receiving high-dose chemotherapy or radiation and bone marrow transplantation. With overfeeding, it is possible to give all the protein, calories, vitamins and minerals a person needs. Also called TPN, parenteral nutrition and total parenteral nutrition.
