Medical Definition: Hysterectomy

Surgery to remove the uterus or womb, and sometimes only a part of it. When removing the uterus and cervix, is called a total hysterectomy. When it removes only the uterus is called partial hysterectomy. It can be done by opening the abdominal cavity, or laparoscopically. Along with oophorectomy is the basic intervention for ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.
