Medical Definition: Iron overload

A condition in which the body absorbs and stores more iron than you need. The extra iron is stored in the liver, heart and pancreas and can cause liver disease, heart problems, organ failure and cancer. Can also cause skin to tan to brown, diabetes, aching joints and abdomen, fatigue and impotence. Iron overload can be inherited or caused by blood transfusions. Also called hemochromatosis.
