Active ingredient in a drug used to treat actinic keratosis (a skin condition that can become cancer). The drug is also being studied for the treatment of cancers of the skin cell and basal cell carcinoma and other cancers. When the cells absorb aminolevulinic acid, including cancer cells, and exposed to blue light, becomes active and kills the cells. It's kind of photosensitizer.
