Function by which gaseous exchange takes place (O2 and CO2) in the cells. In mammals consists of two parts: one, external respiration takes place in the pulmonary alveoli between air and blood, the other internal respiration, takes place between the blood vessels and tissues. The passage between the O2 and CO2 takes place by diffusion through the thin walls of alveoli and capillary endothelium.
