Complement receptor. Definition

Medical Definition: complement receptor

Cell membrane protein able to bind different fractions of complement. There are three types, called, respectively, RC1, RC2 and RC3. Each of them is expressed in different cell types and recognizes different fractions of complement. The most important is the RC3, expressed by monocytes, macrophages and neutrophils, which binds C3bi, an important opsonin for bacteria. Thus, the RC3 facilitates phagocytosis of opsonized bacteria.
