Dermoid cyst. Definition

Medical Definition: dermoid cyst

Cyst that develops from epithelial sheets, which are trapped during embryonic development in the areas of bone fusion. Not to be confused with teratomas. It is located under the skin and attached to the periosteum, it may invade the underlying bone. Is covered by a full-stratified epithelium, including hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Inside contains lipids, keratin and, occasionally, other epithelial complex formations, such as hair, nails and even teeth.
