Typhus epidemic which appears in forms and the etiologic agent is Rickettsia prowazekii. The reservoir of this bacteria is the human species and the disease is transmitted from man to man by body lice (Pediculus corporis var corporis). An outbreak, therefore, appears when there are sick parasitized by lice. Cured subjects may recur, and then called Brill-Zinsser disease. Also known as typhus bellicus, the lice, sailors, etc.
