Congenital anomaly characterized by the union of both kidneys, usually at the lower pole. The incidence is usually one case per 600-800 live births. Is associated with other congenital malformations, syndromes and chromosomal polymalformation often incompatible with life. May produce no symptoms or present with certain manifestations of urinary tract infections, hematuria, abdominal mass or abdominal discomfort. Diagnosis is made through an ultrasound, an isotopic study or computed tomography.
