Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Definition

Medical Definition: idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

Isolated thrombocytopenia with normal or increased numbers of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow, without other underlying disease or disorder, a condition not attributable to viral or bacterial infection, or the action of toxic chemicals or drugs. The fundamental pathogenic mechanism is due to the premature elimination of selected antibody-coated platelets, by the mononuclear phagocytic system cells (SMF) in the spleen. The treatment is done with corticosteroids, splenectomy or intravenous immunoglobulins. Also called Werlhoff disease.
