Reduced volume, weight or physiological activity or specific functional component of a given body. The causes include: nutritional defects (as in the case of central nervous system), low blood flow with ischemia or hypoxia (such as renal atrophy in the renal artery stenosis), lack of physical exercise (skeletal muscle atrophy) or congenital (see segmental renal hypoplasia or Ask-Upmark).
